So the world's most famous football personality has finally fulfilled his wife's wishes and is flying to the States at the end of this season. He achieved bugger all at the Spanish giants of Real Madrid and now he is taking on the US; a league the footballing world describes as one in which top stars go to to see out their career. Indeed, Major League Soccer has seen some of football's greatest stars such as Youri Djorkaeff and Lothar Matthaeus, but in comparison to the European and South American leagues, the MLS is certainly still lurks in the shadow of the might of the Premiership and the Serie A.

So has Beckham made the right decision? Is he a footballing OAP already? Are you just glad he's finally made a decision about his future after months of press speculation?!??!!?

Joe, I think you're missing out on some of the true greats whoi played in the MLS leagues. Pele, Franz 'Kaiser' Beckenbauer, George Best. But I think it's a smart decision on Beckham's behalf. There's nothing i dislike more than watching a veteran struggle on even after they have past their best. Especially in the main leagues in Europe.

I think he has a lot to offer the US, because they are gradually becoming more aware of the sport than they were in the 70's and 80's. I truely believe that he is a great player, and I'm not just saying that because i'm a man utd fan.

Indeed you are right, but also wrong too. As I explained to Tom, who also was at an uproar when I failed to mention these same greats, MLS began only 14 years ago in 1993. Of course, American leagues have been in action for good few decades and the likes of Beckenbauer and Pele did dabble in the American dream themselves. I should have broaded my definition to American football (or soccer) itself and included some of these fantastic players, but the players I have mentioned are obviously exclusive to the new MLS period. Sorry for any confusion!
